In the advanced materials industry, there is a clear trend towards more sustainable concepts, and this is certainly also the case for metals. However, metals are prone to corrosion, and therefore often organic coatings are applied to extend their lifetime. The search for organic coated metals with higher multifunctionality and extended lifetime goes together with the search for more sustainable material concepts. The lifetime of a material highly depends on its exposure to the environment inducing ageing processes. In the current state of the art, lifetime and ageing assessment are performed by means of experiments, combining accelerated and field testing. The only way to realise a substantial decrease in the development time of new materials is to introduce modelling in the design cycle.



Herman Terryn is the professor of Electrochemical and Surface Engineering Group, Materials and Chemistry (IR-MACH) Department, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He is also the part time professor of Corrosion Technology and Electrochemistry Group, Materials Science and Engineering Department, TU-Delft, and the part time professor of Université Libre de Bruxelles, Faculté de Science, Belgium. He is the chairman of the board Research Council Faculty of Engineering-VUB, and the chairman of Cluster “Durability of Materials” Materials To Innovation=M2i The Netherlands www.m2i.nl. He is the member of the Board of SIM “Strategic Initiative Materials” Flanders, the member of Flemish Research Council FWO Board Commission “Chemical Engineering, Material Sciences”, the member of French Reseach Council FNRS Board Commission “Chemistry”, the member of Scientific Advisory Board Max Planck MPIE Dusseldorf, Germany, and the member of Scientific Advisory Board University of Mons, Belgium. His field of research is topics surface science, surface treatments, nano surface layers, electrochemistry, corrosion and protection. Pr. Herman Terryn has published 447 papers in scientific journals. His h-index is 40. He is the founder and editor of the  Proceedings Symposium Aluminium Surface Science and Technogies. He is the Methusalem Grant holder, and the Winner of the Eu-Award European Federation of Corrosion 2014, Pisa Italy. He is honored with the Franqcui Chair “Durability of materials” 2016 at University of Antwerp. He has get the Corrosion H.H Uhlig Award Electrochemical Society 2017, Washinghton, USA. Now, he is also the Honorary Professor USTB, Beijing China.
